Adult Swim's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Substantial Renewal for Two More Seasons.

During the fall season, Adult Swim saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the network introduced a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, evoking a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. At a time often marked by dark humor, this show's sincerity struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Significant Investment

On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Network Praise

Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and championed its distinctly quirky style.

"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about following this endearing family navigate their simple existence.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to help comedy break out of its prevailing layer of irony. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

The Path Forward

Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to experience the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
