An Tale of Unexpected Kindness: When a Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dorm Ground
Back in 2006, I traveled to the Australian capital for a medical school interview. I figured to arrange a place to stay after getting there, but once I got there, a large conference was taking place and all the youth hostels and cheap hotels were completely sold out.
Coming from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind the possibility of spend the night at the airport – only to discover that airport, not like the one back home, is not open around the clock. Unsure of what my next move should be and feeling increasingly desperate, I boarded a city-bound bus and found myself drifting near the casino, reasoning I could pass those hours somewhere that was open 24/7. Admittedly, this plan in the ideal condition to succeed at a crucial interview the following day, however, being a student on a tight budget, luxury accommodation was impossible.
Our society requires more folks like that woman.
I must have looked confused as a young woman spotted me loitering in downtown and wondered if I was OK. I recounted my predicament and immediately she offered I could sleep on the floor in her student dorm at ANU – an ideal turn of events, considering that was where my interview would take place the next morning. She even offered a meal: a leftover sandwiches she had from her part-time job. I had access to a hot shower and somewhere safe to rest to spend the night.
With hindsight, I can appreciate the significant risk she took as a woman inviting a man who was a complete stranger stay in her room. In those days I was in my male privilege bubble and not even thinking to the potential danger. Today, as a parent, I’m amazed she offered that help – yet deeply appreciative.
I didn’t end up go to ANU, and I never saw the student afterwards, yet her memory has stayed with me that incredible gesture of generosity. It is my wish karma has rewarded her generosity abundantly. The world needs more folks who show such kindness.
