Crawley – One

Expected in Aussie conditions but recorded only the fourth Ashes pair from an England opener in just a handful of deliveries.

Ben Duckett – 5

Got starts during each knock. His dismissal during the match was when things started to unravel for the English side.

Ollie Pope – 6

Appears better for adjustments to his technique. The first Test of a series tends to be his best, then it goes downhill. England require him to build on this.

Joe Root – One

Far off his maiden century on Australian soil. England require the nous of their best player if they are to bounce back from this defeat.

Brook – Five

His fifty in the first innings was lively, yet important. Awful shot in the follow-on.

Stokes – Six

Returned from injury with a five-for, though looked short of rhythm with the bat. Struggled while fielding against Head's aggressive batting.

Smith – Four

Could have the skills to succeed in Australia, but needs to smarten up. Can expect a lot of short bowling going forward.

Atkinson – Five

Involved in the strong English first-innings bowling effort and tried to carry the fight while batting in the second innings. Part of the attack that fell apart on Saturday evening.

Brydon Carse – Five

Comparable to above, plus the mustard of being dominated by Head.

Archer – 5

Appeared awesome while bowling initially and proved the top among struggling teammates in the second. Might yet play a key role on the series.

Mark Wood – 5

Finished without a wicket, yet extremely commendable to even take part given his absence.

Australian Team Player Evaluations

Weatherald – 6

First-timer had tough luck to face to Jofra Archer in the first innings, then played his part in the stunning pursuit of runs.

Usman Khawaja – 3

A bizarre Test. Appeared fully fit and spent time off the field. Held on to several key catches in the slips, yet also looked immobile in the cordon. Earns a point for the injury that allowed Travis Head to open.

Marnus Labuschagne – 7

An effective comeback to the side. Handled England's pressure more effectively than most initially, then backed up Travis Head in the second.

Smith – 5

Seemed out of sorts in the first innings. Needless pre-match attack on Monty Panesar.

Head – 9

Perhaps unfair not to get the full 10, however he played a rather poor shot initially. His second-innings hundred proved to be an historic innings.

Cameron Green – 5

Claimed the key dismissal of Pope early. Shaken by a Wood short ball when he batted. Hardly required in the second half.

Carey – 5

Attempted an aggressive response versus England's bowlers early in the match. Tidy with the gloves.

Starc – 9

Carried the burden of the attack without Cummins and Hazlewood with the first Australian Ashes series 10-wicket haul for two decades.

Scott Boland – 6

Short of top form in the first innings. Got better in the second to trigger the English batting collapse.

Doggett – 6

Steady first appearance. Quite capable replacement for Cummins and others.

Nathan Lyon – Two

Almost an onlooker during a game controlled by pace. Maybe picked up a knock when struck by Wood.
