Barry Manilow to Undergo an Operation for a Lung Cancer Diagnosis.
Barry Manilow announced that he was diagnosed with lung cancer and will undergo surgery.
Early-Stage Diagnosis
The legendary 82-year-old artist, known for a string of beloved anthems from "I Write the Songs" cemented his status as one of pop music’s most beloved entertainers, will have an operation to extract a portion of his lung in an effort to treat the illness, which is at an early phase.
“As my fans are aware, I recently suffered from six weeks of a bronchial infection followed by a return of another five weeks.
“Even though I was recovered from the illness and returned to the spotlight for my residency, my excellent physician ordered an MRI just to make sure that everything was OK.
“The MRI discovered a tumor on my left lung that requires removed. It’s sheer fortune (and a skilled doctor) that it was found so early.”
Rescheduled Shows
He has postponed a string of forthcoming shows, but indicated he would be back on stage by mid-February for his long-running engagement in Las Vegas.
He continued: “The doctors do not believe it has metastasized and I’m undergoing further tests to verify their assessment. So, that’s it. No chemo. Radiation therapy is off the table. Just rest and recuperation and favorite shows.
“I’m eagerly awaiting until I return to my familiar venue in Las Vegas for our February love-themed shows.”
A Long Career and Personal Life
Manilow is presently in his 16th year of a residency in Nevada. The singer has spent decades in the public eye and revealed he is gay in 2017, after wedding his longtime partner and manager in secret in 2014.
The couple were in a clandestine partnership for more than 35 years. In 2023, Manilow reflected on how vital his husband had been to him during his rise to peak fame in the 1970s.
“When my fame skyrocketed, it was just overwhelming. And, you know, returning to an lonesome hotel suite, you can find yourself in a lot of trouble if you, you know, you’re by yourself repeatedly,” he said.
“But I encountered my future husband right around when it was taking off. And I didn’t have to go back to those isolated suites. I had a partner to be vulnerable with or to enjoy success with.
“I desire that young people don’t have to go back to those hotel rooms by themselves, because you might succumb to pitfalls. I never did. But it was quite isolating until I met Garry. And then it was joyful.”
