Battlefield 6's Casual Game Mode Sparks Heated Discussions Over Bots, Experience Points, and Wait Times
Over the weekend, the game developers launched a fresh game mode called Casual Breakthrough. In essence, this option resembles the regular Breakthrough format but features a few key adjustments:
- Each team includes only 8 real players, with the rest made up of AI-controlled opponents.
- Activities done by human gamers award complete experience points, while AI activities provide lower rewards.
- Just a pair of maps are available: Cairo Siege and Empire State.
- Features like Dogtags, achievements, and career stat updates are disabled.
So essentially, this mode delivers on its name: it offers a laid-back take of Breakthrough. At face value, one could assume there's nothing wrong, as it provides more options for players seeking different ways to have fun with the game. However, if video games have taught us anything, it is that not everyone will be happy. Which is to say, a lot of BF6 players are mad.
Player Reactions: Anger to Praise
"Gamers prefer human opponents. Avoid making the mistakes of your competitors," reads one reply to the official announcement. "Truly disappointing concept," comments a different user. Meanwhile, on the Battlefield subreddit, a player notes, "I have no idea where we are headed with this game," while another details all the issues they consider to be problematic in Battlefield 6: "Fix bugs, address drone issues, fix IVF rockets, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, improve hit detection. We don't need this bot mode."
On the other hand, for every complaint, there are players sharing how much they're liking the recent addition. "It's enjoyable to practice, real players keep it from being a complete grind but it's very relaxed," reads a forum post. "This subreddit fails to see that there are players who have lives and can't play this title all the time. Allow them to find a middle ground," states another. A response on Twitter clarifies that as they're "a battledad with busy schedules, this is perfect for me," while another praises the mode for "not being overcompetitive."
Constructive Criticisms and Community Input
All that said, there are constructive reasons to criticize the new mode. A few folks have pointed out that it will make wait times more extended for different playlists due to the sheer number of options currently available. On a similar note, some areas already encounter mostly bots in the existing playlists. Additionally, it appears a little backwards that the mode does not begin without a required amount of human gamers, despite it focuses mostly on fighting AI opponents.
Finally, one of the biggest complaints is that Battlefield Portal was promised to provide complete rewards, including AI matches, but that was removed when they attempted to remove XP farming from the system. Thus Casual Breakthrough seems like the player base meeting them in the middle, as per forum feedback. A different user describes this mode as the developers "making a mistake so hard, I experienced so much fun in the first couple of days, what prompted them to adjust it?"
Future Prospects: Will Changes Occur?
Should Battlefield Studios has proven anything to date with Battlefield 6, it's that they're paying attention and responding to feedback. Assignments that were overly hard were adjusted very quickly, as did the specific battle pass objectives. Chances are that, if their data shows this new playlist isn't performing to their expectations, they will not hesitate to make further modifications.
