British Designer Antony Price, Famed for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Antony Price, the visionary style architect who crafted some of the most iconic looks associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the pastel suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
Price's death comes just weeks after he debuted his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in designing form-fitting garments made him a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included a number of outfits for her American tour after assuming the title.
After a career spanning more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
