Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He Claims They Should Face Capital Punishment
Democratic officials demonstrated outrage after the ex-president accused a group of Democratic representatives of being "betrayers" and asserted they should be taken into custody and sentenced "by death" following their publication of a controversial video.
The Recording That Triggered the Debate
The clip, published on Tuesday, features six Democratic congress members who formerly served in armed forces or intelligence roles.
"Like us, you all swore an pledge to defend and uphold this national charter," the lawmakers declared in the brief video. "Currently, the dangers to our constitution aren't just from abroad, but from right here at home. Our laws are explicit, you can reject illegal orders, you can decline unlawful commands, you must reject unlawful commands. No one has to carry out directives that violate the statutes or our founding principles."
Trump's Incensed Reaction
The recorded statement appeared to prompt a angry response from the former president.
On Thursday morning, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another publication, he declared: "This represents really serious, and Harmful to our Country. Their words cannot be allowed to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third post, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also shared a statement that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Officials React
Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, House Democratic leader published a unified declaration censuring the comments.
"Partisan aggression has no place in the United States," they declared. "Congress members who were featured in the video all served our United States with tremendous patriotism and honor. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's disgusting and risky threats of violence against congressional representatives, and urge House Republicans to vigorously do the same."
The opposition officials also mentioned that they had been in contact with security officials "to guarantee the security of these officials and their families."
"Donald Trump must right away delete these unhinged online messages and withdraw his dangerous rhetoric before he causes harm," the declaration added.
Lawmakers' Firm Response
The lawmakers who participated in the video also released a declaration.
"We identify as former service members and national security professionals who love this nation and took an oath to defend and defend the founding document of the United States," they stated. "That oath lasts a lifetime, and we plan to keep it. No intimidation, coercion, or promotion of aggression will deter us from that fundamental duty."
"The most revealing aspect is that the president considers it punishable by execution for us to restate the statutes," they stated. "Armed forces members should know that we have their backs as they execute their vow to the national charter and duty to obey only legal commands. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our duty."
They stated: "The entire nation must unite and condemn the former president's calls for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a period for principled stance."
Additional Political Responses
The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's comments and published on digital platforms: "Let's be crystal clear: the ex-commander in chief is calling for the death of government members."
He added: "This constitutes an clear THREAT. All senators, each house member, every American – without partisan consideration – should condemn this right away and absolutely."
The Conservative official defended Trump's claim that the Democrats had engaged in "sedition", characterizing the video as "extremely improper", commenting: "This represents very harmful, you have prominent officials of the government advising military personnel to ignore directives, I think that represents without precedent in American history."
The GOP official also allegedly stated to journalists that in what he examined of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the crime of sedition" but that "lawyers have to examine the language and establish all that."
White House Statement
During a White House press conference on Thursday afternoon, when questioned by a reporter, "Would the president want to put to death congressional representatives?", the administration spokesperson replied: "No."
"It's important to note about what the president is addressing," the representative declared. "You have current representatives of the US Congress who conspired to organize a video message to individuals of the American armed forces, to serving soldiers urging them to ignore the president's proper directives."
She stated: "The purity of our military relies on the command structure, and if that system is violated, it can result in fatalities, it can lead to chaos, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are essentially promoting."
