England to Start Euro 2028 Campaign at the Etihad Stadium
The English squad will initiate their 2028 European Championship journey at the Etihad Stadium, assuming they secure the anticipated entry for a competition staged throughout most of the United Kingdom and the Irish Republic.
Manchester City’s home ground has not staged an English men’s match since eight years ago, when the visitors were defeated 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is expected to welcome the national team for their first match on June 10, 2028.
England are set to play their last two group stage games at the national stadium, but, if they top their group, their knockout stage opener would be held at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. Finishing second would mean beginning the playoffs at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Competition Opening and Demonstration
The tournament was inaugurated at an ceremony in central London on Wednesday night. Key representatives from European football’s governing body and the organizing bodies were confronted as they entered the venue by around fifty pro-Palestine demonstrators, who urged Israel to be kicked out from global football because of the conflict in Gaza.
Placards were raised with slogans reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters shouted: “Kick Israel out.”
Event Timeline
The opening game of the tournament will be played at the Principality Stadium in the Welsh capital, on a Friday in June 2028, a fixture that will feature Wales if they qualify.
Wembley will host both semi-finals and the final, which will be played on July 9, 2028 with a commencement at late afternoon.
It is expected that an afternoon start, which will also be used for European club finals from the following campaign, will attract families and help reach a more diverse set of fans.
Host Nations
The Republic of Ireland are due to play their opening match at the Dublin stadium and Scotland would play similarly at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.
All four host countries’ teams will participate in the preliminary stage; two reserved places will be reserved for any that do not reach Euro 2028 through the standard process.
Venues and Elimination Phase
Aston Villa’s stadium and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium round out the event’s nine venues. Each one will hold at least one knockout match, with the quarter-finals held at each country’s national stadium.
The qualifying draw will be conducted in Belfast, which was removed as a host city last year when it was revealed Casement Park could not be renovated in time, on December 6, 2026.
Leadership Comment
“It will be a championship for the supporters and a showcase of everything we cherish about the game – its emotion and power to unite individuals.”
In excess of three million passes, a unprecedented number for a men’s European Championship, are anticipated to be released to fans.
