Israeli citizens commemorate second anniversary of 7 October attacks as Gaza ceasefire negotiations proceed
Israelis have come together around the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions advanced in Egypt over a resolution to the war in Gaza.
The assault saw more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most lethal day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.
Israel responded by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are considered reliable by the UN and other international bodies.
"The aggressive adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on that day.
He also vowed to "realize all the objectives of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will not present a threat to Israel".
Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel
The national leadership rescheduled formal remembrance events until 16 October - after the end of the festive season - but ceremonies still occurred throughout the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israelis killed in the Hamas attack was organized in the coastal city. Organized by the affected families, it was broadcast on Israeli TV networks.
Hours earlier, a silent tribute was respected throughout the country.
Ceasefire Talks in Egypt
Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas delegations met in the North African coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of mediated discussions to review the provisions of the agreement.
A prominent delegate involved in the discussions revealed that an night meeting of mediated discussions began at evening in Egypt.
The official explained the day's discussions ended without significant progress, because of disagreements over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not resume fighting after the first phase of the agreement.
He commented that the talks are "tough and have not yet achieve any major advancement," but mentioned that facilitators are working hard to close the disparities between the two sides.
Key Matters in Negotiations
- A lasting truce
- The trade of the hostages still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The pullout of troops from Gaza
- Measures for assistance distribution
- After-conflict governance of the region
Citizen Feeling
In the city's public square earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother lived through the incident on the outdoor event, where many attendees were murdered and numerous more were captured by Hamas militants - explained: "No place appears as home any longer and until all the hostages return no one will have peace of mind."
"After we see everyone home again, we can feel relief anew. Then we can begin to heal," she added.
In front of the prime minister's residence in Jerusalem, people assembled to show their backing for the families of the hostages. Israel reports nearly fifty remain in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be alive.
Demonstrator one woman remarked: "We must do every compromise needed for the captives to be released. But we truly desire promises that we will be safe."
Surveys now consistently show that around the majority of the population desire the war to end in as payment for the liberation of the hostages.
Gaza Situation
At the site of the music event, grieving people gathered to pay their respects.
From that location, the sound of military attacks and artillery could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the severe Israeli shelling persisted.
In the urban center, attacks were documented in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and locality areas and in the east side neighbourhood of that sector, as well the camp to the northwestern area.
"Once the evening arrives, the dread arrives with it," displaced urban resident a local woman, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing previously, described.
"My family are afraid of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are resting together, clinging, particularly my smallest child who puts his head on me the entire evening."
"Continuously we look at the news to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the fighting will come back to us."
Health Crisis
The medical facility in the urban area said it had taken in the corpses of six people by the daytime, including a trio killed in an Israeli attack in the southern area.
A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of the city reported two more victims had been transported. An individual was lost his life by Israeli forces while attempting to get aid to the southern area, health workers reported.
