Jailhouse Surprise: The Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Confronts Time in Prison

He battled the law and the legal system prevailed.

A couple of months following receiving a twenty-seven-year sentence for seeking to “annihilate” the nation's democracy, former president Jair Bolsonaro finally seems jail-bound.

Expected Jailing

The adjudicated instigator – who had been under house arrest in his residence while a series of judicial steps and petitions play out – is largely predicted to be jailed in the coming days, amidst mounting rumors that he will be transferred to a infamous high-security facility.

Previous Statements on Convicts

Throughout Bolsonaro’s 40-year public life, the far-right ex- soldier exhibited scant sympathy for the country's inmates.

“For what reason must we offer those dirtbags a easy time?” he previously wondered. “They should just get messed, period. That’s what I reckon.”

At another time, Bolsonaro stated: “Unless you desire to wind up there, the only thing required is not sexual assault, abduction or theft.”

Incarceration Location Speculation

Yet the possibility of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda top-security prison in Brasília has appalled supporters, four of whom this week inspected the facility in an apparent attempt to dissuade the supreme court from banishing him there.

Senator Lucas, a politician from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was part of that quartet, said he predicted the 70-year-old politician to be incarcerated in the coming fortnight and worried his destination could be Papuda.

He asserted Bolsonaro’s severe digestive ailments – the result of a near-fatal assault during the 2018 presidential election race – meant it would be hazardous to keep the one-time head of state there. “His health is extremely serious. He won’t be able to handle it if they send him to Papuda … It will be terrible,” said the senator, who also voiced anxiety about cramped cells and the quality of prison meals.

When inspecting Papuda, Lucas noted observing cells holding forty inmates: “That’s virtually one meter squared per inmate.

“We conversed to the convicts and they protest, unsurprisingly, of the horrible cuisine,” added the senator.

Allies Speak Out

Lucas is not the sole person voicing opinions before the former president’s predicted detention.

Penning in a prominent publication, one more backer, the ex- communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “harsh” end to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” time in office and alleged Brazil was about to witness “the greatest political injustice in its past”.

“It represents an wrong that eats away the hearts of millions Brazilian citizens,” Wajngarten wrote.

Divided General Opinion

That may be correct due to the considerable following Bolsonaro holds on the Brazilian right. Yet his expected incarceration has also pleased the spirits of millions individuals who believe he ought to be jailed for planning to block the incoming president from becoming president – and also plotting to have him assassinated.

The lawmaker, a representative for the current leader's Workers’ party, said: “Nobody desires Bolsonaro to be put in a dungeon. Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to be sent in segregation. Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We wish him to get respectful care – but dignified treatment in prison. He cannot persist being his self-appointed guard for his lifetime.”

Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro backers, who have for a long time applauding the tough treatment of prisoners, had unexpectedly realized to their entitlements. “Recently has the conservative fringe – which has always claimed that human rights were not for criminals – chosen to tour a penitentiary to find out what situations are really like,” he said.

“Bolsonaro is a lawbreaker,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he earned “humiliating, insulting handling”.

Potential Incarceration Facilities

Despite talk that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which now contains about 14,000 detainees, his probable assigned facility appears to be a close jail for law enforcement and other “special” detainees known as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).

The accommodations are considerably more comfortable than those in the primary facility, although still a world away from the opulence Bolsonaro had while residing in the impressive presidential palace, about 20 kilometers away.

Based on sources, the cell Bolsonaro could anticipate reside in in Papudinha is about 24 square meters – about the dimensions of a couple of car spots – and features a 12 square meter restroom with a bathing area and a 12 sq metre balcony. “The ex-president might be allowed to have a television and also a small fridge in his cell as long as they were provided by his family,” the report indicated.

Political Reactions

The lawmaker denounced the talked-about idea to send the former leader to Papuda as “a form of revenge” on the part of the supreme court judge who presided over Bolsonaro’s legal case and will rule on his fate in the {
