Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”

It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the hospital, where his condition is described as critical but stable.

“Still unsure,” Glenn remarked. “However, I can share, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that reassures me, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”

NYPD shared video stills earlier this week of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims were reported.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning in the area between MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was transported to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his wife just had a child.

“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd was inactive during the current season, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.

He joined the Jets as a new signing in March and was anticipated to become a key part of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on 2 August and had to be helped off.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while working his way back.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
