During my first encounter with the initial Outer Worlds title, I was instantly captivated by its sarcastic, Fallout-esque type of wit. The game boasted engaging exchanges, character diaries, and advertising displays that depicted a business-controlled nightmare that was simultaneously dark and amusing. My primary concern approaching the follow-up was that this installment – not due to from itself – could fail to be as funny as its predecessor.

Certainly, situations weren't flawless. Yet society certainly seemed slightly less fractured in those days. This game showed a bleak future that didn't strike too close to home, and yet accomplished to be simultaneously heartwarming and uproarious. I started The Outer Worlds 2 rather certain that the sequel wouldn't manage to pull this off once more, but I'm delighted to report that I was wrong. This follow-up is just as laughter-provoking as the release that came earlier, and additionally brings fresh concepts instead of simply reusing identical material similar to a overused corporate jingle.

There are still numerous unmotivational posters throughout facilities indicating reductions in pay from workers who even contemplate having a break, but there are also mentions of pyramid scheme methods, featuring a new hire handbook that confidently announces, "Unfamiliar individuals are simply customers YOU still need to meet!" As someone who was raised in a network marketing household, I promptly exploded in amusement upon viewing this allusion, because it's a refrain I have frequently encountered spoken verbatim by those at the bottom of these systems.

Luckily, this follow-up is just as funny and sarcastic as the original title.

This installment furthermore explores the predicament many of us find ourselves in when it comes to employment, politics, and even personal purchases: Being forced to choose the lesser of several poor choices. During efforts to decide whether to assist a harmful business or a problematic faith organization in the game, I realized I became aligning with the familiar evil: A recognized company structure that sucks (yet merely employs promotion to indoctrinate its followers), as opposed to the cult, which is similarly terrible, but uses a horrible approach called "psychological renewal" to control its members compliant.

Questionable Employers

Even the people you represent might not be dependable. In the role of an Earth Directorate agent, you're tasked with trying to reestablish control to this settlement following a hostile corporate takeover, and you rapidly learn that the two the aggressors and the residents follow differing (yet equally horrific) ideologies. However, a rapid examination of the communications on your vessel's computer reveal that the Earth Directorate isn't exactly the universe's most principled authority as well, as shown by an answer to a distress call that notifies the contact it will take "several business years" for an answer to their message. (This duration is about how long it takes for me to get a hold of a non-robot support representative over the phone these days.)

Relatable Moments

Various situations in this sequel are painfully relatable, but it's a cleansing kind of recognition, and this release achieves equilibrium between its grim future world with humor that's authentically amusing while avoiding incongruous. One major theme is the rapid beginning of enshittification that seems to take place in the wake of any major corporate acquisition. Workers from each party of this installment's major acquisition experience their living standards decline as a result, while the CEOs in charge of the food chain are, expectedly, accumulating money rapidly.

Similar to the first game, this sequel is naturally humorous, but furthermore doesn't hesitate to become dramatic. At one point, while wandering around the game's first accessible planet, I came upon a body with a recording close by. This recording revealed that this NPC (who was aligned with the indoctrinating cult) had died in an accident during efforts to hunt down and eliminate her romantic partner.
