Remains of Competitive Swimmer Seemingly Taken by Great White Located on California Coastline
Firefighters in California have found the deceased of a competitive athlete on a shoreline to the northwest of Santa Cruz. The recovery comes nearly seven days after she was reported missing amid growing belief that she was killed by a marine predator.
The body of Erica Fox were recovered this Saturday, as announced by her relatives. Fox, 55, was swimming with a group of more than a several swimmers who entered the water from a popular swimming spot near Monterey, California on December 21st, but she did not come back to the beach. A passerby told officials that they saw a shark with what seemed to be a human body in its jaws come out of the ocean.
The incident and reports of the attack garnered considerable concern and led to extensive search operations from authorities to find Fox. On Sunday, Fox’s husband and other members from her training community held a memorial walk along the shoreline. Her dad described his daughter as an compassionate and good-hearted woman who found joy in swimming and had taken part in several endurance events, including the famous challenging event.
Officials previously initiated a large-scale search effort involving multiple Coast Guard boat crews along with units from local first responder agencies. The maritime authority called off its search efforts for the swimmer after a 15-hour operation that searched approximately dozens of miles of coastline.
California firefighters announced on that Saturday that they had recovered a body on a beach near Davenport. The local sheriff's department issued a statement the same day, citing an active inquiry into the death.
“This afternoon, at approximately 14:00 hours, a person was recovered from the water south of that location. Because of the close proximity to the recently reported shark incident case in that region, our agency is working closely with the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office and the law enforcement regarding the investigation,” the announcement said.
An editor and friend, she, wrote about Erica as a companion and avid swimmer who found tranquility in the ocean. She wrote that Fox and a friend began a practice of weekly ocean swims at the point two decades ago. She noted that Fox didn't require a book to tell her what she felt intuitively: that entering the Pacific was a healing activity for body and mind, an journey as much as a reflective practice.
The editor noted that her friend had developed a profound connection with the ocean by immersing herself—again and again, on stormy days and serene days, accumulating what could only be guessed as thousands of miles.
Additionally that the athlete “understood the risk” of entering the water with a healthy number of predators, and would have disagreed with labeling it an attack. She would have urged people to view it as an incident—an animal’s behavior is simply that.
Although numerous types of marine predators live off the Pacific coast, fatal encounters are exceptionally infrequent. Prior to Fox’s death, there have been only sixteen fatal shark incidents in the state in the past 75 years.
