Taliban Used Abandoned British Gear to Find Afghans Who Worked With Western Troops, Investigation Hears
A whistleblower has disclosed a parliamentary probe that British authorities failed to secure confidential equipment allowing the militant group to track down Afghans that had served with allied troops.
Information Leak Endangers Numerous in Danger
The whistleblower, identified as Person A, explained that people concerned by the security lapse were advised to relocate and change their mobile numbers to ensure their safety from militant forces.
Members of Parliament are looking into the UK government's response of a massive disclosure of confidential data affecting almost nineteen thousand individuals who had applied to move to the United Kingdom to flee militant rule.
Data Disclosure Was Discovered
A data file with their personal data, comprising names, contact details and sometimes family information, was accidentally leaked by a worker stationed at British military command in early 2022.
The incident became known months later, when the names of several individuals who had sought to relocate to the UK appeared on social media.
Taliban Capabilities
Many believe there's a misunderstanding that the Taliban do not have similar capabilities that allied forces use,” the whistleblower testified to the committee.
Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; they possess it. Once they acquire your phone number, they can locate you down to within metres. That's precisely what the unit achieved.”
During testimony about if militant forces had access to sophisticated technology, the source stated: “They have complete capability.”
Aftermath of the Data Breach
Preliminary research provided to the committee indicated that approximately fifty relatives and colleagues of people concerned by the leak had been killed.
A gag order regarding the leak was enacted in late 2023 and prevented any information concerning it from being made public until recently.
Protective Actions
Due to legal constraints, the whistleblower and the non-governmental organization she was working with informed individuals at risk they were working with that they had “suspicions that mobile communications had been compromised”.
“We recommended that they moved if they could and switched their phone numbers. That constituted the primary information that, if authorities acquired such data, would cause their location being found,” Person A explained.
Disputed Conclusions
The source disputed that an official review conducted by an ex-government employee had been incorrect to determine that the obtaining of the records by militant forces was “not significantly alter present danger”.
“The important fact is that these individuals are not standing up to militant forces; they live secretly. The primary issue involves past work history.”
Person A described disturbing treatment experienced by affected individuals, involving electric shock torture, waterboarding, and physical abuse.
“Instances include toddlers who have had limbs fractured to pressure relatives to reveal locations,” the whistleblower revealed.
