The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller Merging Survival Horror and Social Deduction Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive experience where a young woman harboring multiple personalities within her must escape from a maze of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Inside her reside four separate souls, all possessing unique anxieties and drives. These souls can seize control at will, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.
Based on showcased footage, much of the action unfolds within a eerie hospital, though additional clips show the main character navigating a abandoned chapel.
An Environment of Personal Dread
"What are you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Things that appear minor to others can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The central gameplay loop revolves around controlling whichever soul emerges at a particular time. However, these souls will change involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the protagonist in succession. When the soul changes, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision
At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by nurses who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the waiting room have large blooms where their necks should be. Flowers are an ever-present theme, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four souls asserts that the body belongs to them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
Once players believes a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, because every entity can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The final entity standing could be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
