The nation's defense cabinet has formally approved the formalization of 19 fresh settlements in the contested Palestinian territories, signaling a ongoing push for community development.

Hardline Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, a settler who advocated for the step alongside Defence Minister Israel Katz, declared that the approval was aimed at blocking the establishment of a sovereign Palestine.

It is important to note that Israeli settlements in the disputed territories are viewed as unlawful.

The move has sparked criticism from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has commented that Israel's "persistent" growth of communities fuels frictions, restricts Palestinians' access to land, and threatens the prospects of a independent Palestinian state.

Increased Tensions and Political Repercussions

Unrest in the region has increased sharply since the conflict in the Gaza Strip erupted in the autumn of 2023, intensifying concerns that the growth of communities could entrench Israel's occupation and weaken the prospects for a peaceful resolution based on two states.

The concept of two states refers to the formation of a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, with Jerusalem's eastern sector as its seat of government, broadly along the boundaries that were in place prior to the 1967 Six-Day Arab-Israeli war.

Since coming to power in late 2022, the current Israeli government has greatly accelerated the green-lighting of new settlements and started the process of legalization for previously illegal settler outposts, recognising them as "extensions" of established communities.

A Pattern of Expansion

The latest approval pushes the cumulative figure of settlements approved over the last three years to 69, as stated by Smotrich.

These decisions are announced just days after the UN said that construction in settlements had attained its peak since the year 2017.

The latest group of approvals encompasses the re-establishment of two communities — Ganim and Kadim — which were dismantled nearly two decades ago.

Earlier this year, Israel authorized twenty-two additional communities in the occupied West Bank - what was the largest expansion in decades.

Furthermore, the government gave the go-ahead for blueprints last summer to erect in excess of 3,000 residences in the controversial E1 corridor between Jerusalem and the Maale Adumim community, a initiative that had been frozen for decades amid fierce global opposition.

The Israeli government was against the move, with PM Benjamin Netanyahu saying that a sovereign Palestine "is not going to occur."
