The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Song
This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure from Critical Role, revealed a new opening credits. It features our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and making their mark, while teasing at several agonizing backstories for characters such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.
Overall, the opening appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the music selection.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional song created by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece from the official score of the same name, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental choice, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will love its presence.
Personally, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician the artist, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the track was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my device. This track that excites you before you dive into an installment of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, the creators has already said that the animated show will have a few surprises and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of the second series, the actual play are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
