The New Mayor Promises a 'New Era' for New York City in Inaugural Speech
During an initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” New York City, promising “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious start to his term.
A Groundbreaking Mayor
The new figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
